well why do you want a pedal?
what sort of sound are you trying to get?
if you're looking for versatility possibly go for a multi effects pedal.
ive heard good things about the boss me 20.
i have a zoom g1x which is good but i usually just use my amp now. |

I guess it just depends on what effect you want the most. If you amp has good distortion without a pedal get a wah. If your amps overdrive sucks then I would get an overdrive pedal because that could make everything you play sound better sound better. |

dude get a flanger it instantly gives about 20% more metal tone, also if your looking for wah don't bother unless your gonna be playing alot of Hendrix or Hammet solo's I also like to use a chorus when I'm trying to get a Maiden tone and of course the standard overdrive pedal will give you something similar to Iommi and of course theres also a Tape Delay that sounds pro, I would just check out the Boss website as they make some of the best pedals around and if your trying to emulate the tone of a certain guitarist you can always check their wikipedia page to see a list of their pedals |

Last year I owned a DigiTech Death Metal and it killed man.
Super heavy!
I actually used it so much that I destroyed the battery life.. Oh well then I sold it for another DigiTech GNX pedal. |

Why don't you check out some demos on the internet and decide for yourself for yourself?
But if you want a brief definition for each one, then here goes...
Reverb - makes you sound like you are playing in large room. Fattens up your sound, rarely used in metal though.
Delay - copies the signal and plays it back, kinda like an echo.
Rotary - emulates a rotary speaker.
Tremolo - an effect where the volume of the output fluctuates.
Chorus - the signal is copied and played back a few milliseconds later. Creates a warm effect.
Phasing - same as above, but the signal is played back slightly later. Gives a kinda squelchy tone.
Flanging - same again, played back even later. Gives a jet plane whooosh sound.
Compressor - Makes your notes all sound the same volume.
Octave/Pitch Shifter - adds another note above or below the original signal.
Wah - by moving the pedal, you can change the tone of your guitar.
Distortion - loads of different types, I don't think you need me to explain to you what it is...
Also, Autowah/Envelop Filter - creates a wah effect, depending on how hard you hit the strings.
Whammy - bend the pitch up or down by using an expression pedal.
EQ - change the EQ (add more bass, etc) of your tone.
Vibrato - makes the guitar's pitch fluctuate slightly.
Detune - "detunes" the pitch slightly.
NB. Tremolo is a change in volume, vibrato is a change in pitch. Tremolo bars should really be called vibrato bars but they were erroneously named and it's stuck. |

I duno, it's just a kinda of speaker that spins round I think.
Best thing to do to hear what chorus, phasing and flanging is is to listen to demos of them, BOSS have loads of examples on their website. The delay on them is so small that it sounds like it is the same note, but it gives it a different tone.
Overdrive is what it sounds like, when the input to the amp is really high, it makes the amp distort. It isn't the same as dstortion. Distortion is a digital effect where the input waveform is clipped.
You always diss them, but multi FX pedals are really useful as a first pedal. I have the Digitech RP200a. In time you may want to buy more pedals, and just keep the multi FX for just distortion or something. |

reason y i diss them, is tht i asked around and i get 30% love them 70% h8 them. i heard tht the effects can be very "mushed together" and not coming out as good, especially if u dont have a good one. my distortion on my amp is perfect for what im playing, and i love it, although the main prob is which i dont like to do, but have to is i crank my gain all the way up. i find tht when i lose gain, the note doesnt last as long, loses its punch, its kick, it doesnt sound as pure and faades off. any pedal tht suspends the sound well, and makes it sound better, gives it better tone is the pedal for me, any pedal do such thing? |

Don't forget Fuzz pedals.
They are cool, they are in the distortion category, they (obviously) make you have fuzzy distortion |

A compressor, which is built into most multi FX pedals. I wouldn't say the FX of my pedal are "mushed together" at all, and it cost me just over £100 which is $200 so it's not ultra expensive or anything. 30% is still quite a few people, you never know, you might be among that 30%, I would definately try one out if I were you. |

Some pedals are meant for some amps, so you might wanna ask what overdrive and pedals will work with yer amp, some are meant for tubes, some can work with both. |

I'm not an expert, but I believe there are different types of overdrive pedals. Those that boost the output from the guitar to naturally "overdrive" a tube amp ("treble boosters"), and those that emulate the sound of an overdriven amp. |

Yep Black hit the nail on the head ,there are diffrent kinds of distortion pedals, I have used two distion pedal at one time,1 a boss and a old rocktron, but turned off the overdrive on the amp, there are so many conbinations its unreal, but really its one of those things where you have to sit down and mess with and for the multi effect unit,I never heard of any prblems ,I have only had one but didnt have any problems with it the only problem I had was that there were to many tones on it that I spent my playing time messin with all the noobs and switchs and really didnt play anything.....lol, but messing with tone can be endless. I been chasing tones for half my life. |

EMB5490 says: what are some good brands of pedals to look at
I think a brand called MXR makes a lot oof pedals. Also Dunlop or Vox for Wah pedals. Maybe Pi for distortion pedals.
But don't get hung up on what brand it is! Not everything Boss makes is great, and there may be some brand you've never heard of that makes really great stuff. Don't just skip over it because it's not a big name. |

It's called a tube screamer because it's creating that sort of sound, a tube distortion. You can use it on any amp, with varying levels of quality. |

@EMB: Yea I traded my Marshall in for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Tubes are the ways to go judging from my limited experience with this one. |

I used to have a Zoom G1... Not G1X though. I didn't like it much.
I like DigiTech's pedals for the most part and Boss has good pedals. That's all I know from the experience I had with pedals. |

I think a Wah will be the next pedal I buy after the Tube screamer. I love to here a Wah kick it during a really good solo. Like in "Sweet Child o Mine" I also like the way Jimi Hendrix used the wah in his music. |
