It takes time. The more effort and concentration you put into learning, the quicker and broader your abilities will grow. |

I had the same problem. What really helped me was I would focuse on one finger every time I would change chords, kinda like a lead finger. then I would use that to set up the chord for my other fingers. Before long my fingers were just falling into place. |

ive only been playing since late january or early feb so i guess im doing o.k. try to evaluate how i play, please lol my parents go "oo ur gr8 omg ur gr8." we all know how parents lie bout tht stuff, and my friends are always trying to be better, anyway this is what i can play:
songs:
rhcp:californication (intro, solo, very clean) scar tissue (all solos very clean)
boston: more than a feeling (intro, bridge, solo, intro is almost clean, bride is clean and solo is almost
gnr:november rain (1st nd 2nd solo, 1st kinda clean 2nd needs work) knokin on heveans door(both solos, first perfect, 2nd almost there)
dire straits:sultans of swing (first solo, perfect)
lynyrd skynyrd:simple man(intro, clean)tuesdays gone(whole song, almost perfect besides final solo which is pretty good)free bird(song up to the major solo, and ive made my own versions of this and tuesdays gone)
i can play all chords if shown with a delay time to get my fingers on them. when i bend i hit other notes, im 10x worse with pick unless alternate picking.baaaaad at rythm just started it. cant control how many times i alternate pick. cant play too fast but can trill on 2 notes, not 3 like in the 2nd solo of sultans of swing. idk if i missed anything and i know its kinda hard to do w/o a vid, which im working on, ive been playing for about 2 months so far and thts what i got.im asking cause im just curious if im starting o.k. or im making ppl go deaf, tnx
when i say perfect, i mean i can play every note, maybe not sounding like they do, or a tad slower in some cases but perfect as in evry note. clean as in most notes and sounding how it should.

Everyone has that problem when they start out, and with practice and effort it goes away. You've gotta walk before you can run though I'm afraid...
I think a good way of teaching your fingers where they need to go is to fret a chord, move your fingers away from the neck, and then fret it again. Repeat this many times for each of the common chords seperately. After a while you'll become a lot faster at fretting chords because your fingers have memorised exactly where they need to go for each chord, and you might find you can form the finger shapes in mid-air without the guitar neck showing you where your fingers should go. Once you've got this covered, you can start stringing chords together.
Here's a couple of tips: 1) Look out for chords that share the same notes, eg Wonderwall by Oasis - the 3rd and 4th fingers are anchored on the same two frets while the 1st and 2nd fingers move position. 2) When strumming, change chord shape before the beat, not on it. You can either miss out the final strum of the bar, or strum a percussive "click" as your fingers mute the strings, or just strum open strings. Nirvana are a good example of how to do this 3) Don't worry about always fretting every note of a chord instantaneously. Take an E7#9 chord for example:
E7#9 1 e + e 2 e + e 3 e + e 4 e + e
E -0---------|--------------------------------|
B -8---------|--------8---8-8-----8-8-8---8---|
G -7---------|7---7---7---7-7---7-7-7-7---7-7-|
D -6---------|6---6---6---6-6---6-6-6-6---6-6-|
A -7---------|7---7---7---7-7---7-7-7-7---7-7-|
E -0---------|0---0-------------------------0-|
The #9 is only added on the 2nd beat of bar onwards. All you really need to play when you play a chord is just the root and the major or minor 3rd, and it is somewhat vital you play at least these two notes on the first beat of the bar after you've changed chord so the listener can tell what the new chord is. The 5th, suspensions, 6ths, 7ths and other added notes can be added at later points in the bar to give a bit of variety. That isn't to say that you shouldn't play those notes on the first beat of the bar - it just gives you a little bit of breathing space if you need it, and works very well for music with a strong backbeat (emphasis on the 2nd and 4th beat).
Hope this helps. |

In the end it's all about boring old repetition and practice. To play songs you have to be able to change chords very quickly and you can only achieve that by creating an extensive range of whats called 'muscle memory'. As you practice, you'll find that over time you won't even need to 'think' about where your fingers need to be, they'll just go there! |

If you learn how complex the hand is, and how our brain works with it, it is mquite amazing to coordinate even the simplist guitar chords. Your hands are filled with small muscles, and eventually build muscle memory for writing, typing, gripping, and for some, pressing on and off tiny metal wires on a slim piece of wood! |
