Taylor Guitars

I have been looking for a new acoustic guitar and I wanted thoughts from people about Taylor guitars...And if anyone knows anything good about Alvarez guitars (not the classical guitars but steel string)

What are you playing now? If I may ask?

Carvin acoustics are the best. no question. taylors are good, but they are nothing compared to carvin. i havent played anything at all that has compared to my carvin. go to: carvinguitars.com and check 'em out.

I think you are on the right track with a Taylor or an Alvarez. I've gotten to play both. Alvarez have a mellow tone. Great lows. I love how understated they are. Very plain looking but beautiful sound.

Taylors are so bright and easy to play. But be ready to spend big. The cheaper Baby Taylors have two screws visible in the neck...looks cheap to me. The 100/200 series are laminated. laminated what, I don't know. Just FYI the low end Martin is laminated too.

I got a great deal on my guild (check it out in the Guitar Pic Post) or I never would have been able to afford it.

I would be careful with a carvin a guitar that retails for 13 hundred shouldn't sell on the internet for 5. They look like a good deal but even the website says 'it is hard to find a guitar of this high quality for equal price' I agree high quality acoustics are expensive!

Have you ever played a Carvin? I guess not, or you would believe me.

Not to deny your claim, but I have played a carvin and I honestly didn't like it. But it's due to taste. I prefer a rich warm low over bright highs. It was of good quality and made flawlessly. Also played nicely I'm not going to knock it, but I personally didn't like the tone.
Martin makes an acoustic that I like because of the tone, but man is it heavy. It's made out of an exotic wood. The same wood that Warwick uses for their basses.

Yes I have played a Carvin. I've also played a Taylor, Alvarez, Washburn, Tacoma, Martin, Breedlove, Ovation, Yamaha, Tanglewood, Johnson, Takemine, Dean and Graphite guitars. Wife's cousin owns a guitar shop. And I agree with wicked beast. To me the Dean and Carvin are very similar in sound. There doesn't seem to be the depth of tone in these brands that you get with Martin and Alvarez.

I didn't say that Carvins were no good. Just that the statement that Taylor's are "nothing" is absurd.

Oh an answer to his question... that's simple, Go to your nearest guitar store. Don't plan on buying anything, and don't buy anything with out thinking about it. Play every acoustic that you want, and tell by your own preference of what is good for you. Acoustic guitars have their own unique voice. Yes, their are good brands out there, but even a lower density in the same wood can make the voice of the guitar sound different then one that was made right after it.

I have a sigma that i love and know how some people feel about martins, but for a mere $250 used i could not ask for a better guitar. what can i say i play cheap guitars

it has 3 rosewood back and sides and solid top action is nice and low. the tone is bright and thick, warm, oh an amazing guitar. the guitar is loud too, my only complaint is it's not electric acoustic. i have an pop in pickup but really does not do it any justice.

well thanx for the heated debate from all. I'm probably in the 400 dollar range or somewhere around there. I think I did like the way the Taylor guitar played over the Alvarez. At least for the sound i want. I'll go check out the Carvin also.
-I actually have a classical Alvarez and I like it a lot but i want a steel string acoustic. I appreciate the comments on the guitars

I picked up a really nice Yamaha AX Electro Acoustic in your price range. Plays real sweet and sounds good too. But in fairness, I don't know much about acoustics.

Oh! And it's steel strung as well!

I'v had my eyes on a Washburn acoustic for some time now. I have a fender that I have been strummin around on for a couple of months. I learned all of my chords on it before I bought my electric guitar. The Washburn sounds good, looks good, and comes with a case for 300 dollars.

It's at the shop where I bought my other guitars. It's just the local guitar shop here in town.

I don't know how things are in the US, but in England I've found everything on the high Street is a bit cheaper on the net.

I saved about £50 buying my Yamaha on line instead of at my local music store!

You may be able to pick up a used martin on ebay or used at a guitar store,but I'd just go into a guitar store and play every guitar they have, then deside wich you prefer

Are Martins good guitars? I talked to a guy at work and he swears by them, But he plays bluegrass...

I'm not really into bluegrass.

for me its Martins all the way But that is just my preference. I have a Martin D15, the more its played and the older it gets the better it sounds. I have had Fender,Takamene, Alvarez, Washburn, and my wife has a Ibanez acoustic. I have played Taylors Gibsons and many others I still like Martins the best. I've had my Martin for 9 years now thats longer then I've had any other guitar acoustic or electric.
