Ionian is a "mode" when major is "scale", I dont know if there are deeper difference of these two concepts, but "basically" its a different term of "starting point in a scale". yer missin' nothing... major is major ala: 1234567 so the diff in "Ionian" and Major = none, nadda, zip, ziltch. 
 
granted, there are many "major" scales, triads, etc-etc found all over the neck  
BUT 
if ya mean the old 1234567 M = M
