A G chord on the 6th fret is known by no other name tha Gmaj?

whaaat? the sixth fret isnt a G, its an A# or Bb. And it totally depends on what other notes that are in the chord to define what chord it is

I tried 6 different variations of G and not a single note falls on the 6th fret. Could you tab out the chord you are making?

I use a chord that straddles the 6th string...does that count?

This can be called G/B or first inversion of a G chord. It is a great chord to arpeggio if you are playing a cleaner sound.
