Is it safe to remove the pickguard?
Would it effect the sound?

lol, it's perfectly fine. I, personally would leave it on to protect the body of the guitar, but it's fine without it. |

All right. I think it looks better Without it. Dont know why.
And i usually strum at a weird curve, pick goes over the "treble" volume knob, so scratching isnt a problem |

As far as looks go, the only thing I would tell you not to do is put a bigsby on it. Just looks bad on Paul's. |
