Randy Rhoads sound/tone

Hey again, I am trying to find a good starting point for the Randy Rhoads sound. I am very picky about the sounds I try to acheive, and the sound that am getting right now, is missing something, but I don't know what! Please Help.

hi.well youve stumbled into the right obsessor. as you all know i am an obsessed rhoads fan...so heres what he had

4 or 5 marshall jmp's, 1 modded which was late 70s, stock late 70s, another stock late 70s, handwired/earlier 70s, handwired/earlier 70s.

his guitars are(main):gibson les paul custom, his white one. its a 74 or 75 i forgot which i think 74 and its stock. a karl sandoval flying vee. the polka dot with dimarzio super and pafs, and his jackson vee, with sd distrtoions and jazz.

effects/pedals: mxr eq, cryababy wah, mxr distortion +, mxr flanger, korg space echo, roland tape echo/delay, mxr stereo chorus,

now to get his sound you need:

vintage jmp(s) more than one helps but one turned up high is good, DEFINATLY a mxr distortion +(vintage) in overdrive (output up, distortion down), chorus he uses in cleans, crybaby although doesnt use alot is not a true bypass so effects the signal, same with all the other effect. an mxr 10 band eq, ther good new. now u have to jump your marshall to get good tone like his, he stack jumps them, instead on jumping it from input 1 to input 2 in the same marshall he does it in 2 diff ones, very cool. now. turn your treb and presence between 3-6 (play with it) bass at like 6, mids higher at like 8. he had high mids and lower trebs and bass.

mxr:stero chorus, distortion +, 10 band eq, and analog delay

also remember. tone no matter from what. ou can get great stuff, but nothing will effect your tone more then your own playing

my "rig" if you could call it that(I'm in high school still, so not a lot of mulah):
-Squier Strat running in "humbucker" mode; splitting the signal between the bridge and middle pups into
-Vintage Deluxe Big Muff Pi(Compressor and Big Muff), I'm using this mainly as a compressor and signal booster with a light light fuzz, going into
-RP90 multi-effect pedal, this is used for eq, noise gate, and delay,
finally all this goes into
-Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 15-R(tube like tone, ss amp), running this on about 7 for my Gain, gets too muddy at about 8 1/2, and about 8 for my volume on that channel, EQ is Mids boosted above the highs, with bass cut down to about 5-6, with reverb on 7.

i am sorry to say but with that rig you wont get his tone. and it will be very hard to come close.

squire strats have very thin sounds, and wont get that thick tone he has. a compressor makes the signal a bit mucky so take that off. any multi effects pedal wont sound as good as singal effects. usually ther eq delay are ok, never heard of it having anoise gate. again with the amp its not gona get it. what id do is this:

fiddle around witht the big muff the disotrtion, maybe turn it off, turn it low, im guessing with a solid staten ur gona get lots of hum since the amp has its own gain signal. maybe just try it in an overdrive mode, output all the way up, gain all the way down. that would eliminate the noise gate. randy didnt really use delay, but he did, if u want his album tone he didnt. if live he did but only somtimes, his album tone is VERY hard to acheive because there are 3 guitars, that requires a tiny bit of chorus, tiny bit of delay, and a tiny bit of reverb, maybe on like 2 or 3, not 7. put ur mids high and high lower then bass. best thing is to play around with it, he didnt use a lot of effects nor did he use commpression, reverb, delay that much. the reason u need all those effecrts for the album sound is b/c of the triple tracking, i woulnd tadd those effects if i were u it gets very muddy and sloppy.

I know my amp won't get the EXACT tone, but it does get fairly close for being an ss. I played around with it last night some using some of the eq settings you gave me and it does sound better. Using very minimal compression volume from the Deluxe Big Muff, with very little fuzz, all it does is boost the signal past the noise gate while not allowing any hum to come into the amp from my guitar's signal. It also makes my amp sound brighter and more full than if I have it off, not using any other effects from the RP90. My amp gain is about 8 with the volume at 8. Sounds fairly close to me, really just trying to figure out a good overall Rhoads tone to practice with. I'm expecting a poor mans JCM-800, the Peavey Windsor 100W all tube half-stack soon. That should help my sound.

as another amp, id look at the jcm, jtm reissue, windsor is ok. the valve king is much better if u have the money, also check out an orange amp, vox ac maybe w/ pedals, idk try stuff.,

Squire strat won't cut most likeely. With a good array of pedals, eh, maybe, and a BIG maybe. Try like Jackson and Dean. Both lighter guitars with raunchy heavy tone. I play dean just for comfort [ML] but if you know Randy you definetly know the V. Jackson makes SOME cheaper Randy Model V's. If you want to just get the cheapest on that has a Floyd. A V without tremolo seems kind of pointless to me. Idk.

And YES, Elliott is THE man for Randy Rhoads stuff. You really don't even need Randy posts. Just PM him haha lol j/k.

well, tight budget...sucks, but I did manage to get a close tone with what I got(to my ears anyways). I will keep in mind the difference of the guitars too, I found a sweet Jackson Rhoads with a Floyd Rose and EMG pups(guy changed em) for about $200. Which leads me to my next q: is it worth that little? I am definitely thinking about it.

Play it. See if you like the feel. Test everyting. Versatility, tone, ability to play your style. If so DEFINETLY get that. Thats an awsome deal if its not messed up. But yeah play it. My saying, "Play wit da ho, befo ya spend the dough" lol. I know. I'z a wigga haha. Actually I'm not. I'm glow in the dark. Literally. That pale. Makes for a good Icebreaker though. haha

and no not a stalker, but i believe he ws definatly the best guitarist ever. and i kinda got that stuff conicidence, not until i got my chorus pedal did i realize i bought the exact stuff he had.
