i have this instructional dvd by michael angelo batio called "time to burn" and in one of the sections he talks about modes. he said that when he was younger his guitar teacher told him "no matter what mode your in, find the dorian position." and i was wondering why that was? what is the importance of that? |

its probably just a point so if you know where this shape is, you can just connect the shapes from that one |

I don't agree. Perhaps in the beginning it should be important, but then that would only matter if you're playing in a minor key...
The point is so that you know where you are on the fret board, but it's more important to see every position, so you know exactly where you are every point of the way. |
