Question

I was just thinking today while playing guitar, my brother has got a set of drums, so why the heck dont i give them i try and try and become good on them, even if i only learn the basics could be beneficial for my future band having a bit of drumming knowledge.

Now i know this is definately not a drumming website, but i was just wondering, how long would it take to do the basics of drumming, and be pretty good at it, and then i may even feel the need to go all the way, why not better yourself, so how long would it take to become very good?

idk really, probly just drum along to songs i guess... i dont play drums tho so idk

my friends only been drumming for like 3 or so months and hes pretty good.

Not to much. I've only been behind a drum set like 5 times in my life, and I can improvise my way through songs I don't know.

Learn how to perform rolls (always start with your right hand), make sure you separate your hi-hat hand from your kickdrum foot (you'll understand what I mean later on).

I would think, after learning the basics of any instrument, drumming would become much easier. Considering you're it's like you're hitting open strings in time-That is, you're not playing pitched notes, just the right drum/cymbal at the right time.

Although you do have to tune the toms and such.

Instruments are like languages after you learn two, they become easier and easier. The drummer from No Doubt b/s'd his way into the band w/ very little experience. Wasn't the best band in the world, but he had to play competently.

As every instrument you pick up, it depends on how much time you spend learning it. Get simple beats down, pick up the pace, add extra symbols, whatever. Make sure to have fun while doing this.

But by learning the drums, your sense of rhythm will improve immensely.

A MASSIVE POINTER!! Try playing along to a metronome, almost every single drummer I've had wasn't able to play to a metronome while we were recording even though they were amazing, because they went off into their own rhythm and couldn't follow a metronome. It'd be helpful for everyone, and of course yourself, to try it to a metronome.
