Ok, so everyone has been going fruit-loops and cheerios over a band called "Paramore" lately. Now, I'm not one to judge based on appearance or anything, so I decided to give them a listen.
Well, they're an ok band, but way over-rated. Not bad, just over-rated.
Here's my problem with it all: Hayley Williams.
For some reason or another, people don't seem to care if their music is good or not. But rather that their lead singer is "ZOMG SO HAWT!1!!11ONE!". What's happened to music? Back then, music was based on musicianship, ability, and the emotion of the lyrics/song. Now, it's simply based on if the band looks good or not.
Another thing is that people seem to forget that the band is called "Paramore", not "Hayley Williams". Honestly, this Hayley-mania has got to stop.
Well, I'm off to listen to The Beatles, and Bob Dylan - Some of the only music left that means something. |

Don't forget about other bands such as the Jonas Brothers... the only reason teenage girls like them is "They are SOOO HAWT and me and JOe are gonna get married!!" But really, all of them are ugly and talentless. They look and sound like girls, how is that talented?
But those two aren't the only music left with meaning. There are tons more around today with a great message in them. |

Yeah, at these days if you are guitarist, you cant get famous. You must buy an Y jacket or get some hood and make some DJ jimbo jambo...
with lyrics like our all-time favorite E-type!!! "here i go again and fade away"... ergh... or "CoCO jambo, CoCO jeeee!!"... ah dammit..
But our last hope is free do..doh! but I agree that there are some bands that still do music for their expressions instead of money.
here is maybe one at these days:

Your sister is crazy lol.
How old is she? o.O
It's really weird how some of these band's "Fans" are actually older than 10 years old...
There was a kid in my class last year (when i was in grade 7) (who I hate) and everyone thinks he is gay (I think he is too) and he actually LOVES the Jonas Brother's "Music" It scares me.. |

I almost typed out another wall text about the changes in music leading up to the exceedingly low level of muscianship in popular music, but I probably wouldve offended a few people and also typing on an iPod touch is a pain.
So I'll just say take a look, and you'll see that this is logical conclusion for music today. I can only hope that one day there will be another revolution and there will once again be a greater appreciation for music with high levels of musicianship once again. |

Well said foog, but i think its hard us to get another revolution, if we take our memories to turning page from 60' to 70, war on Vietnam, flower peoples from San Fransisco... our world lived xtreme age of change... anarchy, revolutionarism, change in world and all that also gave musicians endless source of Inspiration and everything was new.
But how is our state at these days? All those revolutionary thoughts are oldschool, most part of the world feel good (we know thruth better do we?) except those 3rd world countries. Ill think everything is goin to be dulled.
Its not mindbursting to feel that we have only dull world to get our inspiration on music, so what we can do? |

Im just tired of these mass produced bands. You all know what Im talking about. Nowadays it feels like music just rolls off an assembly line. Everybody wants a piece of the fame, but nobody has the patience to put out quality music. Popular music, well MOST popular music, today seems to just be rehashes of a tried and true method established in the 90's. There are many bands still worth listening to still, but the majority of music nowadays is just "flavor of the month". There's always stuff to write about, to get angry about, to love about someone else, its just that pop culture has pigeonholed us in the direction were moving. |

Like Disney. That is "Assembly Line" music.
I can't stand anything that is Pop or Rap or anything that isn't rock music related. Cause it is all annoying.
The only thing people seem to write about these days is "love" songs.. that don't even sound like they have meaning. |

There is plenty of rock and metal that is following the same trend. Maybe I'm just angry and young and looking for meaning in the world. But where are the supergroups? The virtuosos? |

yeah in todays media and image driven celebrality culture a band or whatever has got to be easily presentable i.e. attractive. or they just wont take off like one that is wrapped in alot of hoppla. if they have a good sound or quaility that appeals to some segment they will get by hopefully, but will never be as $$$$ succesful as a group created by and pushed by one of the super labels(i.e. assembly line group) |

look at the grateful dead phenonom
the band had 2 singles in some 30 years went on 2 different tours every year until the band split up except for 2 tours. every disc and album released sold 500,000 copies and went platinum the first week. every show they played was sold out.
By all means they were very successful but they did it on their own terms based on music, not image. |

damn straight. nowa days its gotten so easy for talentless lowlifes to get record deals e.g. Paris Hilton, Jordan etc. it makes my blood boil, especialy when theres plenty of great bands out there who would want that deal much more. its not like back in 50s - 80s when you actually had to have talent to gain a deal. |

My problem with Paramore (or Paramore fans, I guess) is that lots of people say the singer is hot, but I really don't find her to be that attractive...
I've heard some of their music, but I don't really care for it. |

I've heard some of Paramore's songs. It's definitely mass-produced popcrap. How can I tell? You can't hear the guitars or bass, it's like listening to a weird hum with someone singing over it.
Anyway, foogered, you're in Cedar Rapids right? I can be there in two hours (1.5 if I drive fast), we're going to start a new band and pioneer a new musical revolution. Mkay? |

"Meh" isn't even a word. You might be able to find it in "slang dictionaries" and such, though. However, the rest of your spelling/and or grammar, is horrid.
Then again, I'm a part-time grammar-nazi. |

I typically hate grammar nazi's, but I can't understand half of what Pager says so I usually skip his comments. It sounds mean, but it gives me a headache when people type "sumfin" and "dat".

Skold says: What's happened to music? Back then, music was based on musicianship, ability, and the emotion of the lyrics/song. Now, it's simply based on if the band looks good or not.
Back *when*?
I'd agree that the Hayley phenomena is ridiculous, especially since she's not *that* hot. She's certainly not ugly, but she's not "OMG, i wanna have million uv ur babees!!!" hott. But music, at least "pop music" (and I use the term loosely, encompassing everything from early jazz to 60s to psych-rock to contemporary hip-hop), has always been about the image. Someone mentioned The Beatles... well, they were fucking teen idols with a girls screaming and fainting left and right. And as for musicianship, Ringo wasn't a very good drummer, and John and George were only so-so guitarists (though they got better). Lou Reed's another great example... the man's *cool*. The definition of the word. But half his songs are literally 2 to 4 chords. He's still brilliant, though.
Look at any of the 50s one-hit wonder pop darlings, any of the 60s fashionistas and novelty bands, any of the 70s AM pop giants, etc... It was always about image. Even legendary/respectable acts like Bowie, T. Rex, etc... really played up the image and their good looks for all they were worth.
It's nothing new. It's human nature, and since music is a COMMERCIAL market, obviously it's gonna be sold for whatever commercial appeal it has (and people like hotties - face it, we all do). But that's far from all music's about. Kid Rock, for example, completely sucks, is a huge douchebag, AND he's ugly. But he's huge. The American Dream, folks!
Music (at least the music business) has always been about image, because that's what people gravitate towards. We don't all have the time and money to go buy the CD of every band we hear and form a full opinion of them... we take whatever stimuli we can get. Hotness is one of those stimuli.
My point in this long rant is... to segment it into "talent vs. looks" is ridiculous. There's obviously something more to it. I can think of a dozen *technically* great guitarists who bore me to death, and I can think of a dozen hotties who I cringe when I look at. I realise this is a musicians forum, and *most* musicians are ugly (anyone denying it?), so I understand the bitterness, but... Have a realistic perspective.
As for Paramore... they're famous coz what they play and how they look is something their audience can relate to. Right thing at the right time, I suppose. |

According to the US College Board, at least, I am "Qualified" in English Literature and Composition. I'm not sure what that's good for. Oh, I remembered: I don't have to take introductory college courses for it... Even though I won't major in English. Wow, that was a waste of time. |
