Who out there loves Tool?

I love Tool because every single instrument and sound with them just blends so smoothly. Somewhat satanic but amazing.
I also love the effects that they use

Tool is by far one of the best bands I have heard in a LONG time!
They are so unique and awesome.

Maynard has a pretty sweet voice too.
First song I heard was Prison Sex, saw it on an episode of Beavis & Butt-Head bahah

I just love the style of music. I like when they change it up and it becomes like a kind of frican style with the drums and timpanis

I really liked 10,000 Days. The ideas behind all of the songs were great (especially in Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days). Jambi and Right in Two also show off their musicianship with all those rolling riffs, crazy drumming, and freakin' sweet grinding bass going into huge crescendos. The first time I listened to that album I was in awe at their level of playing, a level paralleled by very few bands.

Tool will probably go down as one of the greatest bands ever, that's for sure.

One thing I hate about them is this though:

They have a bunch of those stupid things on their albums that aren't even real songs, they are just weird sounds, or like, talking, etc. It's kinda annoying and could be done without. Would make the album a lot better.

However when they don't do that stuff their MUSIC is phenomenal!

You guys ought to check out Jesus Lizard. I always thought they were similar to tool but way more twisted and intense. tool has changed some in they're latter disc.

There are some videos, but they aren't that great, cos some of them aren't synced quite perfectly, and others sync them the other way round. I'll have a look though.

What I do is create a playlist in Windows Media Player of Wings for Marie (Track 3) and Viginti Tres (Track 11), and play the playlist at the same time as playing 10,000 days (Track 4) in iTunes. My laptop has buttons on the keyboard for starting and stopping playback in Windows Media Player, so I click on play in iTunes at the same time as pressing the button on my keyboard to start WMP.

This way is handy because you can alter the volume levels for each program, so that you can hear what is going on in each track.

Having said that, if you have Audacity or something then you could probably use that to sync them.

Either way, it sounds awesome.

You can hear why it's useful to alter the volume after 1:11. This is only the first part of it. There is another video but that one syncs them the other way round.

Tool aren't satanic. This song is about the 27 year (~10,000 days) paralysis and eventual death of Maynard James Keenan's mother, and how she has ascended into heaven.

"10000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I have come home now!

Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father,
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.

It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my,
Give me my wings..."

Well it sounds Satanic anyways, but in a good way because Tool is the shit!

And I'm guessing "Marie" is Maynard's mother? And she gets wings.

Yup, Judith Marie Keenan is Maynard's mother. The song "Judith" from A Perfect Circle's album "Mer De Noms" is also about her, saying how she didn't deserve to be paralysed, but how she kept her faith throughout it.

The wings bit is about her becoming an angel.

Ooh, how old was she when she died? And how'd she get paralyzed, or was it just something that came?

I read that his mom had an aneurysm in her brain (a blood vessel, like an artery or something, burst) and that caused the paralysis.

Yeah ; / I wonder what causes them?

And, from songfacts:

"As lead singer Maynard James Keenan explains on commentary on aMOTION, his mother Judith Marie suffered a stroke in 1976 that left her partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. The length of time between her paralysis and her death was 27 years, or approximately 10,000 days."

That's cool, but I would have said Meshuggah are more avant garde than Tool. Tool are kinda more "arty".

IMO, they just have a sorta "eerie" feel to some of their stuff.

Not really. Adam Jones uses a few tritones in his and riffs and solos I think, but their main characteristic is their extensive use of complex time signitures.

Sounding eerie doesn't make something satanic though.

A lot of Tool's work shouldn't be taken at face value. They have a song, kind of an interlude, called "Die Eier Von Satan", which sounds satanic without even listening to the track. The track itself sounds like a Nazi pep rally, but it's actually a recipe for hash cakes in German, and the title translates to "The Eggs Of Satan". Apparently in Germany, eggs is a slang term for ones testicles, so the actual title of the track is "The Balls Of Satan"!

I duno much about Satanism. Christians believe in the devil, but they say God is more powerful. I guess Satanists say it's the other way round? I'm not sure. And nor do I really care to be honest.

Wow, bhs, Satan's nuts... lovely thing to write a song about xD

I have a question though, mainly for bhs but you guys can answer too;

Why does Tool have so many of these weird intermission type things? Like those things that are just weird noises and stuff, they annoy me.

I duno really. Just to be different I suppose. I listen to quite a bit of prog/psychedelic stuff so interludes like that aren't really that uncommon. Lateralus, Undertow and the Opiate EP don't have any of them though I don't think. They probably want you to listen to and view the album as a whole, rather than see it as several songs.

I think you make a good point, bhs.
Plus sometimes the intermission type things are just a filler.
Sometimes they even suit the album/songs.
