Tough one. I've wondered the same thing. Some Strats have that airy sound though. Could just be delay.

I think it's something to do with where the mics were placed in relation to the amps when they recorded it. My multi FX pedal has cabinet modelling and you can choose where you want to put the "mic".

I almost got that sound at guitar Center with a standard Strat and a Roland amp.I just plugged it in and I was like shit because I had a hard time figuring out the settings and I had to leave.

Yo guys...David got that epic tone for the time solo by using a combination of guitar effects/amps/speakers that included:[All Vintage Of Course, which DOES sound different] Deluxe Memory Man Delay,[which also has analog chorus and vibrato on it],Fuzz Face Distortion[yes the same kind hendrix used],Analog Reverb Pedal[cant remember the brand],+ Ibanez Tube Screamer[which in combination with the fuzz face produces a natural compression-sustain],all played through Fender Twin Stack, as well as a "Leslie Rotating Speaker"[out of an old Hammond B3 organ]which gives it that swirling sound..Not to mention David's special combination of active single coil wireing in his strat[you can buy these set up just like David from EMG pickups].
Hope that is helpful to anyone wondering about wonderous tones.
