Blues

Is learning to play the blues in a lead style essential for progress, because maybe thats my problem.

Slash from Guns n Roses played really bluesy stuff, mainly in his solos with Guns n Roses, even though they were a metal band.

Slash's Snakepit & Velvet Revolver are bluesy too and they are still rock.
It might help you out though to learn some bluesy stuff, that way you are more diverse and can play more things

Hard Rock/Metal

Yeah, I'd call Guns n' Roses classic rock, or metal. We're talking original metal. And Skold, are you saying metal crossed with glam equals rock? Narrrrr, I disagree.

Well, it's more of the hard aggressiveness of metal, and the catchy/glam style of, well, glam. A lot of that often comes forth in rock (at least it DID).

As far as original metal goes, the ones under that title are Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, and possibly Metallica.

I think I read somewhere that Led Zepellin were the first to be called metal in a music magazine. Black Sabbath, I agree - but they aren't that much different than Zep when you look past the earlier doom stuff and the dark imagery. Priest and Maiden are similar to eachother but not to the others and I disagree with Metallica. They share more in common with 80s hardcore punk bands like Discharge (who influenced them a lot, and are local to my city actually :D) than other metal bands like the ones being listed.

A lot of music is catchy, it isn't the fact that it's glam that makes it catchy. Glam applies to a lot of the things involved, including fashion. And there's agressiveness in lots of different music, not just metal.

metallica started has a mix of heavy metal like maiden and priest, and punk. and james also invented screaming or growling or wutever u wanna call it =p

but this conversation... is not about blues =p

i dont consider zep metal, they are hard rock. sabbath could be considered the first metal.

Well hard rock and metal are pretty close to each other. I consider Gn'R metal with some songs, but others are more classic rock.
But Slash is a really , really bluesy player

I think the line is blurred between original metal and hard rock EMB. Besides, Sabbath and Zep are similar in genre a lot of the time.

It doesn't matter which genre came first. It's the aspects of the two genres that can make a totally new one, or an already existing one. GNR Basically took aspects of Metal, some aspects of Glam, and made rock that ROCKED....really...really hard.

I don't think Twisted Sister is "glam" because that implies glamour, and we're not glamorous.
We should be called "Hid" because we're hideous.

Twisted Sister was Glam as far as their appearance goes.

Skold: GNR took aspects of lots of music, not just glam and metal - so you can't claim that's what they 'basically' did.

Essentially, it is. Don't get me wrong, they did have blues in there as well, but the main aspects seem to come mainly from Metal and Glam.

Twisted Sister only had the makeup part of it... but it was crazy makeup. Guns n Roses you can hear punk, metal, hard rock, blues, metal, all sorta of stuff. As Doz said, not just "glam and metal".

I wouldn't call Zeppelin metal (a title they happened to hate), but they do serve as something like a template for all metal bands that have followed, along with Sabbath.

yeah man they were pioneers and they were in the group of The New Wave of British Heavy Metal it was more just hard rock but it was the template as Crunch so elequently said

so to answer SouthernGuy82 question is i think learning to play blues style is a great gateway to other rock music. The blues showcase some cool licks and technechs used in other types of music.

I was never a person who liked the blues until i learned to play them now i love it.

Ahhh, yerr. I agree with telecrater. It's a very expressive genre and can be good to build up your improvisation and soloing skills.
