Or what is THE abyss or w/e ?

An abyss is like a pit with no end.Like a place of no return or an unknown place.Slayer probably associates the abyss with hell and the huge fire pit its described to be.The abyss is thought to drive people mad.Anyone have other definitions?

Usually I find abyss used in a negative connotation, although it could have that seemingly neutral stance.
