Hi. I've just joined the group and this is my first post so I'll start by saying "Hello everyone!"
I've been having some really bad problems with'cramping' as I'm getting older, and I've heard that the SG has a thinner neck than most guitars making access to the more difficult chord shapes that little bit easier.Do any of you know, is this fact or fiction, and if so, should I be looking at SG's with a rounded neck or something like the '61 re-issue with it's slim taper( my local shops only have Epiphone SG's at the moment so I can't just go and have a try)? Thanks in advance.

I'm not into SG necks myself... what guitar are you using and having problems with?

I'm using two at the moment, a Les Paul Studio and a G&L ASAT. I'm having the same problem with both. Extreme pain in my thumb after about ten mins of playing. Particularly when using bar chord 'A' extensively.

SG's play really nice and do in fact have a thinner neck...but i cant stand the sound for my style of music so im not particularly into them. if you play heavy metal but like the Sg shape. check out the ESP Viper. its got a similar body shape, classic ESP thin "u" shaped neck, EMG pickups and is really an awesome guitar. The only downside is that they tend be a little expensive if youre gonna buy it new.

I haven't actually considered the newer makes of guitars. I'm still stuck in the sixties when the only guitars worth having were Gibsons, Fenders and Rickys.

Ah, I agree that LP necks are chunky (most, anyway). To thick for me... but I feel that the SG neck doesn't feel right in my hand.

I'd wait until you can try one, but don't just try an SG, try a load of guitars.

I've just had a go on an ESP Viper standard. Very comfortable, very impressive! Thanks for the tip-off G.Slinger. I'll still hold back 'till I've tried an SG, but I think my minds already made up!

If you like Strats Redstrat, have a go on a G&L Legacy. They play just like Strats used to play before that damned record company bought Fender out in the early seventies.
