Allright, what comes to thread and metronome thing to speed up playing, is that you follow your teacher methods. You could push up bpms as fast as you can think of IF, you can play them but concentrate that you play them to beat.
To question you asked last in your first post... there is no answer. Some people found the idea fast and they play like virtuosos in half an year, but others like me... self taught, take years to understand things, that is... damn simple.
Like guitarslinger said it's a cliche, but it is really, you need creativity, you need that you feel and let the music come through your fingers, other people may disagree, but that is not found in technique training, playing and training covers or playing pre made compositions... as I see from you writings, you are leaned to lead playing... practising those "crazy train" solo's or something, maybe cool for practise, but it not "give" you anything for real.
What gives you satisfaction in playing is that you can express yourself with an instrument or you may use it as an instrument to take you where ever you want mentally... your technique training helps you, it give you tools to achieve that, but until you don't how I say, "understand" few simple, but hard to find things in theory, you are beyond to reach that, no matter how good you are technically and run arpeggios lightning fast up and down and so forth...concentrate theory.
Im not near any pro, I have huge amount holes in my theory understanding, but when I found out the meaning behind that most important thing in music is... the key. (goddamit It tooks years that my stupid head got it, do not make same mistake.) Many people that do not know me and heard my playing praises it and thought my playing level is far above my real level.
Key, scales and relative scales. Rest is up to your imagination. I strongly suggest you first start to improvise scales over key strictly and do not play "this and that" and think you improvising :)... you got to know what is the thing or baseground to what.. you improvise.
well...like Phip said in past, my posts are like morning puzzle, might be that you didn't got much sense of my nonsense raveings. Sorry about that xD. But anyway, keep on goin m8, you are keen to learn universal language, it's not easy, but It's damn worth of it. Keep on pushing any way that is fun and give's you pleasure over frustration.
ps. search "backingtracks" from youtube and try a bit scales over them while keeping in mind the meaning of relative scales and modes... and when you doing that, you dont train technique, so forget those arpeggio runs...xD
-Cheers
