A question about the Modes

Are the ionion, lydian and mixolydian modes known as the major modes. While the dorian, phrygian and aeolian are the minor modes. And of course the locrian mode being a diminished mode, or scale? Or is this analogy completly wrong?

To clarify, the ionian is the major scale, and lydian and mixo are the 4 and 5 modes of the major scale, same for the minor...

Since the ionian is major. i'm guessing then that the aeolian is a minor mode or scale.

Then what do you call the other 5 modes?

For example is the locrian mode diminished?

Maybe this will help. Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian whether you call 'em modes or scales are Major due to the fact of having a natural 3rd not a flatted 3rd. Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian and Locrian are minor due to the flat 3rd. The position of each one in relation to the Diatonic Scale determines the mode. I don't know if I would call Locrian diminished though. Just because the Diatonic chord is diminished the Locrian scale and the dim. scale are different.

Locrian= 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7
Diminished= 1 2 b3 4 b5 b6 6 b7
Dim. Half= 1 b2 b3 3 b5 5 6 b7
Dim. Whole= 1 b2 b3 3 b5 b6 b7
