Is it possible to plug a guitar directly into a cab? No head?
All i need is to crank the volume. Nothing else. And ive seen cabs for cheap on craigslist. The head is what kills the wallet. And my tone. |

i dont think you can. im about 95 percent certain of that. you need a preamp(head) to amplify it. I think, im not 100 percent sure how that works |

no, the cab is just speakers. You have to have a pre-amp and power amp to put the guitar signal through the speakers. The reason that the head hurts the wallet is that it contains the electronics, speakers and a box are cheap |

You need the amp to amplify your guitar. Are you sure your speakers don't suck too? Different speakers may make a crapy head sound fine. A great amp with crapy speakers will sound like ****.
Get a decent head, find amazing speakers and you're set. Unless your doing crazy big shows, you should probably invest in a combo tubed amplifier.
Cheers. |

for now i just need to be heard over the drums.
I only have about $100, and im 15 so noone is hiring. And we cant play any paying gigs until we get a bassist and finish writing the first 5 song lyrics. |

OH man, funny thing you say that. Someone I know on another forum (gaming) asked for a budget of 200.
TO be loud enough over a drummer, look for an amp around 25watts (solid state) keep in mind wattage on a tubed amp may be less for more money but they will: be louder than a solidstate amp listed with the same wattage, they will have a "warmer" sound (a more fuller range, especially in the bass end). So if you can get tubed, however with a tight budget, you'll probably end up looking at solidstate amps, and there's nothing wrong with those, simply a different sound.
Play on the amps before you buy & do some research online for reviews and prices (Refurbished equipment will save you money!!!)
Have fun picking out your new amp! |

Do what I did. Plug into ya dad's stereo and crank it. Or, get a old second practice amp like a peavey or gorilla. Hammer the hell out of it.
Um, or ask around and loan some gear. |

EMB, the Line6 rack mount I have is nothing short of amazing. Their amps are fun but I would nor buy it because of all the excess. |
