question about humbucker pickups

why are they the best what makes them so different from the rest of the pickups?never used,em but lookin 4 some pickups,wonderin if they,ed be a good choice?????thanx in advance.

they aren't the "best" per se, they are just different that single coils and P90s
humbuckers are great for a nice fat and warm sound, and really give you nice full leads

single coils on the other hand, can give you shimmering cleans, and are fantastic for some slightly dirty blues and SRV like sounds.

they are just different that's all, not better than single coils, just different.

humbuckers are called that because instead of a single coil they have two coils, one of which is inversed in polarity. this cancels out any 'noise' that your pickups can... pick up... and returns only the sound from the vibrating string. they "buck the hum", hence, humbuckers.

if you have a guitar with both single-coil and humbucking pickups you can tell the difference fairly easily. OR if you have a guitar that allows you to use two single coil pickups in parallel. for instance, on my strat HSS you can hear the "hum" when using any single pickup, but when using the neck and middle pickups in parallel, or when using the bridge humbucking pickup, the noise is removed.

for what it's worth, i have a squier strat HSS and an ibanez artcore AS73 (HH). i love the sound that the hubuckers make on the artcore, but am not so much a fan of how it sounds on the strat (where i use the neck pickup for rythm and middle pickup for lead, and ignore the bridge pickup for the most part). i wish i had just gotten a SSS strat but this was before i knew practically anything about electric guitars.

yeah, but a fat strat has a much more tonal capabilites IMO, you can get my favorite with the bluesy neck pickup and the more heavy and warm sounds with the bridge humbucker.

I think mine might just be two single coil pairs on my guitar, but who knows. My old guitar had humbuckers though, but I didn't necessarily like the sound of it. It was kind of a P.O.S. though, and I like the clean tone my guitar has now. I think a heavy sound is good for the music I play though, so I guess I could use an axe with some humbuckers.
