when asked about his approach to writing solos he said he thinks about the keys and the scale 4 the key then he said he maps it out in theory,so my question is what did he mean by maps it out in theory. |

he would use the "correct" mode for the notes/chords being played during the solo.
So for example,(for a song written in a major)if the bass player was to play an A, B, F#, G# for the solo notes backing the guitar, Randy would've played something out of A major, B Dorian, F# Minor(Aeolian), and G# Diminished(Locrian).
Hope this helps |

u could,nt play just play 1 scale over that progression cuz i,ve studied his solos alot and i,ve never seen a bunch of modes in 1 solo, and if its a fast progression it would be hard 2 play the notes over every chord from a different mode so how else can this be done? |

i can honestly say i know more then the average person about randy.
Randy didnt just play diatonictly. hed play over the chords. this doesnt mean u stick to the notes in the chord, or even the scale tht goes over that, or EVEN the 7 different modes over it. you can still play diatonicly.
basicly you take a chord progression and his style is minor. mainly mixo, phrygiaan, dorian, aeolian, thats if u want modes of course. basicly what hed do if play what fits. so over a chord, hed somtimes play the chord tones, 1,3,5. hed also plaay the scale over that chord even i its not diatonic at all. hed also do some chromatic stuff. what interview are you getting that question from?
when he maps it out mapping out would mean finding every place you can play for the solo, however Randys solos were mostly written in the studio, his more simple solos improv, are over either the chords or diatonic. and alot of the time his famous chromatics. howver sayn this has no meaning. its not like if you knew all the theory in the world ud be able to write like him. it takes a special person to write that well. and although theory will help, it wont do it. |
