Anyone ever hear of 'em? I like them. My guitar teacher has me learning one of their songs ["What Drives The Weak"] right now. ITs pretty badass musically. The vocals I am slowly adapting to though. Definetely not for the timid.
I know about these guys. I saw them play with Unearth a few years ago. A **** ton of bands only do metal(cookie monster) vocals nowadays. Shadows fall sings too.
Everyone seems to call this music "metalcore" because its Metal mixed with hardcore. I think its just metal.

I think Shadows Fall is pretty cool. They surprisingly get a decent amount of radio time in my area, so I hear them from time to time.
I think if you like them, you may also like the band All That Remains, though they tend to scream more than SF. They still do some singing though (in this song, it's in the chorus).
metalcore seems to be what everyone's listening to now.
it's what my kids listen to. i actually like it compared
to the sleu of hardcore music thats out now. i feel
it's really tough to be original when it comes to hardcore
music and this is the reason why metalcore came to be.
to be "different" from all the other hardcore music.

Yeah, personally I don't think its that good to be held down by a certain genre, cos' look at the bands who were so original, they either made their own genre or can't really be explained.
Metalcore is very similar to 80's thrash in the sense that it is the marriage of punk and metal. In the 80's it was traditional nwobhm with punk music, now its heavy metal/extreme metal plus hardcore punk.
And breakdowns are massively popular because of this music. They are, afterall, the part at a show where everyone in the crowd goes ****ing insane. But they need to be purposeful to the composition and intelligible, not to randomly be thrown into songs, which seems to be what alot of metalcore bands do...

the difference is punk was good in the 80's, now its just some emo guy singing about how he hates school, and everyone hates him, and he hates everyone, and he hates is ex.

Yeah, theres a metalcore scene about 45 minutes away from me. The people who listen to it SEEM to only be interested in the fashion (which is humorous because I think its starting to be influenced by hiphop culture). I don't like metalcore, but I see potential in it. I like the riffs; they're heavy and really cool. Breakdowns, however, I pretty much hate. To me, its like having a filler in a 2-3 minute song. If they replaced the breakdown with a bridge building up to a face-melting solo, it'd be awesome. I don't dig the screaming vocals either. Can anybody understand it? Every now and then I'll catch a few words, but not most of the time. But more and more metalcore bands are becoming more and more melodic, singing more and even you'll see some solos. I think its evolving into something that will eventually be legit.
