Agathis

Hi all
Any of you got a guitar made of Agathis (LTD for instance)? If so, any praises/complaints?

I do. I've got an ESP/LTD explorer made of agathis. its pretty much the best cheap wood you can buy. it doesnt have a whole lot of sustain, but its very light and for the money isnt bad at all. of course im a little biased cause the explorer was my first guitar so its like my baby. it is a great guitar for the money though. but it doesnt compare to my more expensive guitars.

I was checking out the specs. on the LTD Viper (as if you hadn't guessed!). It looks like a fairly faithful copy of the original ESP (though much less expensive of cause), but I'd never heard of agathis.
So, do you think an LTD would be a bit disappointing after trying out the real McCoy?

Whatever you do do not get a BC Rich they are crap.
Used to have a Warlock, agathis.... it sucked.

Is it like really light wood kinda make the headstock seem heavy?If so i got my son a Dean Vendetta(first guitar)and it was really wierd to play.

well LTD is the cheaper ESP. but there is definitely a tonal difference. if you have the money, i would recommend getting the ESP viper or at least the second step up (ESP/LTD usually make their guitars in three price ranges).

How the **$**"! Did that happen?

hehe...yea thats the top for their LTD right there. I'm lookin' at the EX-400 Explorer to replace my EX-50. all the 400 models are great guitars, and they are only the second or third step up too! just proves that ESP makes awesome guitars. yea man, go for the viper 400 cause the next viper up will prolly cost around a grand and anything less than 400 series is only good for beginners.

also, check prices at musiciansfriend.com they usually have great prices.

I'm just waiting for musiciansfriend.com to get back to me. Their 'ship within the USA' prices are excellent, but I've got a sneaky suspicion that import duties (to the UK) are going to spoil things. Meanwhile, I've seen what looks like a pretty good deal for a ESP/Ltd Viper 500 (black with an ebony fretboard) going for £506 ($1000 aprox) from Thomann's. Any comments on ebony fretboards? I've never used one.

ebony is the best. my washburn has an ebony fretboard, and i wouldnt want it any other way. ebony just feels different than other woods and i think it has a smoother resistance. all depends on what you like of course. but im definitely a huge fan of ebony fretboards.

Ltd makes most of their guitars...the ESP models are the higher end guitars and are usually custom.
