hey i am going to start teaching, and would like to know what you wish you could have learned in the beginning that would have helped you the most or what ideas you would have skipped that you dont feel have helped you
thanks |

i wish i had learn scales etc much earlier :) , also many exercises i played over the years really didn't help me i think , i wish i had learned bar chords more earlier and still i wish to learn to learn more about theory , chord progressions and steadily raise my speed without losing accuracy :) |

i think, tell your students to use their pinky, from the very beggining, and if YOU dont use your pinky, then you should start.
you might want to ask them why they want to start playing guitar, because although alot of people wanna be the next hendrix, there are alot of people who only pick it up so that they can play their favourite songs along with the CD or radio, or down at the pub etc. |

thanks to all who have posted on this i and my future students will appreciate it greatly, and for soy.el.che, go w/ minor chords if you want to do some emotion it will sound darker, not quite as bright |

To be honest, I wish I had discovered Joe Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, all those amazing guitarists with a deep knowledge of both music theory and technical ability much earlier. When I first started out I was listening to the usual kinds of rock/metal e.g. AC/DC, Metallica, RHCP, Maiden, Sabbath, etc. But I found their stuff started to sound quite 'same-y' and unoriginal after a while. Then someone introduced me to Satch and I was like WTF!!! Who is this guy, why the HELL can he play so fast? And why are each of his songs vastly different? Which is when my appreciation and fascination in music theory started. I Googled 'music theory' and this site showed up. In fact, this place is where 95% of all my theory has come from, so thanks to anyone who has ever responded to my posts. I suppose what I'm trying to say after all of that is that I wish I had been shown lots of different kinds of music earlier on, instead of repeatedly listening to the same stuff.
