Hey, sorry, maybe a stupid question. Whats the difference between a 'Emin9' and a 'Emin Add 9'?
Not a stupid question at all - if you don't know the answer how can it be stupid?!
The difference between Em9 and Emadd9 is that the second is made up solely of an Em chord with the 9th whacked on, while the first one is an Em with the 7th
and the 9th.
Whenever you see a chord with
add in it, it means to play the chord with only that extension you see written after, e.g. Cadd11 would be a C major chord, with just the 11th on top.
However, if there is no
add, you play the chord with all the triadic extensions up to and including the written extension, e.g. Cmaj11 would be a C major chord, plus the major 7th, 9th and 11th (B, D and F).
Furthermore, if the chord says Cmaj9 you play a Cmajor chord with the
major 7th (hence the 'maj' part of the chord name) and the 9th (so a B and D), but if it says C9 (without 'maj' written), the chord uses a dominant 7th instead (so a Bb and D).
Hope that all makes sense,
