Why is there no maj 11th chord, since there is a maj13 and a maj13#11. I would assume that a chord with the notes c,e,g,b,d and f would be a Cmaj11, but that doesn't seem to be the case (it's a Dm13(no 5th), or a F maj 13#11, but no Cmaj11. Is there a reason for that?? |

I'm pretty sure there is such a thing as a maj11 chord. I'm presuming you've used the 'chord name' tool on this site to come to the above conclusion? I have used that thing several times for chords that are often quite straightforward and it has churned out some incredibly long and complex chord names, I think it's just some sort of funked-up design flaw! |

sure there is a maj11 chord, 1-3-5-7-9-11 i think makes it up, although the 7 & 9 are optional 'cause of finger/string limitations |

So I assume this is a G maj11 chord, although the "chord name-tool" doesn't give you that name:
1 2 3 4 5
----[----[----[----[--A-[
----[----[--D-[----[----[
----[----[----[-B--[----[
----[----[----[-F#-[----[
----[----[--C-[----[----[
----[----[--G-[----[----[

sorry, i actually remember it being 1-3-5-b7-9-11, also you dont get many maj11 chords as they are mainly sus4 chords, as when you use the major third and the perfect fourth they clash and sound abit wierd, so usually the 4th replaces the 3rd, |

I think the 1-3-5-b7-9-11 is a dominant 11th chord (or just 11th). The major 11th would have 1-3-5-7-9-11 (?), it's just that I've never seen it anywhere, but in theory... |

I play blues/jazz and using the Rmaj11 or th R11 chords are quite common in that venue. For a guitarist it is very unlikely that you will play all sixs notes of the chord. The absolute most important notes of the Gmaj11 is to capture the R, 3, and 11. When you add the 7th and the 9th you will get more color in the chord. It is ok to ommit the 5th.
The G11 (dominent chord) it is important to capture R 3 b7 and 11. This chord is really nice in blues progressions. Again, its ok to omit some of the other voicing in the chord like the 5th and 9th. |
