I just bought an Ibanez rg470 and immediately began messing around with it so as to learn the ways of the Floyd Rose system. Well, as expected, I ended up breaking a few strings. Anyways, the guy I bought it from had Dean Markley Blue Steel strings on it and I have heard that you can't use certain types of strings with Floyd Rose systems, so my question is this: does anyone know exactly what the specifications are on this/which strings are usable and which are not? I usually use Ernie Ball because they're cheap and my local store has tons of 'em, so can I just continue to use these and just reset my new guitar to Ernie Ball strings?

REAL Floyd Rose guitars use special strings, but I've never heard of the Ibanez Floyd Rose systems being incompatible with any strings.

I have an S470 Deluxe and I put all kinds of strings on it with no trouble at all.

Awesome, that's good news. If I had to continue using this guy's old strings, I'd shoot myself. They feel so damn weird to me. :/

Thanks, Foogered.

You do not need special strings for a real floyd, a licensed one, or unlicensed. I have 2 RG Ibanez's and I regularly string floating bridges up at the music store I work in. You can put any set of 6 string electric guitar strings on a floyd, so long as you balance out the spring tension in back and the height of the bridge.

I use light gauge strings on my Floyd Rose and it sounds awesome!

I like old strings. I just changed the strings on my guitar. I hadnt changed them for over a year and I have to say GHS makes the best light gauge strings.

When I say REAL Floyd Rose guitar I mean a Floyd Rose GUITAR, not a guitar that uses a Floyd Rose bridge. The Floyd Rose guitars have no tuning-pegs on the head stock, so you need to purchase special strings for them. The strings have a metal piece on the end that sits in a saddle where the neck meets the headstock.
