ok why is it that when i changed my strings they're farther away from the fretboard than the old ones. I did change to thicker strings but still that shouldn't happen right? Anyways my quiestion is how do i get the strings closer to the fretboard or the fretboard closer to the strings cause the way they are right now is a disaster. i cant play at all... please help |

you should always only change your strings three at a time...when you take all the strings off at once it takes all of the tension off your neck at once too and your neck will bend. there are three ways to fix this...one-you can adjust your action by lowering [or raising] the strings at the bridge...its usually done by raising or lowering the whole bridge. two- you can adjust your intonation and action at the bridge as well...if you look where the strings sit on the bridge, they should sitting on little pegs (for lack of a better word). these pegs have a horizontal screw with a spring on it. you can adjust by turning the screws. three-most guitars have truss rods which run through the middle of the neck. if you look on your headstock there will be a cover with a few screws in it...if you take it off youll see the end of the truss rod...you can adjust that using an alan wrench by turning it...i wouldnt recommend doing that yourself unless you have experience (which im asuming you dont or you wouldnt have asked). ....you can also just take it into a guitar shop and have them do it for you...
just a note: if youre talking about an acoustic guitar or have an acoustic bridge on your guitar, way number two cant be done-you will actually have to move the bridge backward or forward. also-with an acoustic bridge the only way to adjust the height is take the bridge off and there should be a little piece of plastic or something under it you can take it out....and the adjustable end of the truss rod will usually be just inside the sound hole. |

yea it is as simple as it sounds...there should be two screws on either side of the bridge which extend into the body of your guitar...just turn the screws to lower or raise the bridge...just make sure you get them even or you'll have an even harder time playing! but if you've never done it before, i would highly recommend taking your guitar to a shop to have it fixed. |
