Hang on for just a little longer dude! I'm currently writing a lesson on this exact subject (lydian, mixolydian, dorian, etc.) It'll be up within the next couple of days in the 'lessons' part of the site!

Hey man.. while Afro_Raven is working on the lesson I will try to help you out a bit. I had the same problem, all my solo playing sounded the same. But there is one important thing your missing.... its chord progression.
The chords that you play bring out certain notes of the scale you are playing. Im trying not to get into too much detail here but when you play a minor chord it brings out the b3rd note in the scale. If your playing a major chord it brings out the 3rd. If your playing an add9 it brings out the 2nd/9th note. This adds a certain feel or sound to the scale.
Try using different chords and you will here a difference, some notes sound sweet these are the notes that the chord brings out.
There is a bit more to this but I would wait until Afro_Raven's lesson.
Now about the other scales you mentioned. Ok READ this it will help you out a ton. Ionian,Dorian,Phyrgian, lydian, mixolydian,Aeolian, locrian... All make up the Major scale over the entire fretboard. Hmmm.. this maybe confusing if I try to explain it, I will just show you.
Go to the "guitar scales" on this website. Make sure its on full under patterns. Put in C Ionian. Look at it. Now put in D dorian. any change?
Then put in E phyrgian, F lydian, G mixo, A aeolian, B locrian. there is no change because all these scales have the same notes as the C ionian. They just start at a different note(the note that is dark orange).

Hey guys! I've submitted the lesson to Admin for approval so should be up shortly! I even got my Mum (who couldn't care less about music theory) to read it and she found it both helpful and interesting!
Regards,
Afro
