Active usually means that the device runs on wall power or battery and it changes the sound of an instrument. Examples are effects pedals, or more powerful EQs. Passive is something that uses the existing signal and only modifies it a bit, such as tone or volume knobs, or some forms of reverb.
Generally active is better than passive, but for some things passive works okay. What kind of music are you playing, and what's your gear? |

actives are powered by batteries, and from what ive heard are good for metal. |

hy, thanks by the advice,i think i needed it a lot, cause it will make me be more carefull at the time to choose pedal or someting.
im a beginner, i have a lyon guitar from washburn, crybaby pedal, and a litte amp that came w the guitar.
my kind of music... there are a lot, but my favorites are: nu metal, classic rock, flamenco, alternative, white metal and those things |

id say save up more and buy a tube amp that would suit your needs, like a peavey of some sort instead of getting a pedal. this is because amps affect your tone more than pedals, and beginner amps make pedals sound rubbish, i should know:D |
