Lol. You need to understand basic theory, so well that you could teach it, before moving on to Jazz theory. It gets pretty complicated.
Since my favorite site isn't working, here is a link: http://www.jazzguitar.be/

Do you need to learn to read sheet music in order to fully understand theory and play well? It's such a drag in my opinion...
But I wish I knew it hehe... |

For starters, instead of using triads, they add on the sevenths to them.
They use many altered scales/chords. With minor progressions, they harmonize from the harmonic and melodic minor scales. They use a lot of chromatic movement. Lots of stuff...
Learning to read music will help you as much as learning theory will. If you want to play stuff outside of pop or simple rock music, you'll need to learn eventually. Might as well start now. It really isn't hard to learn how. It just takes time to be able to read it fast and such. Otherwise, it isn't much(if at all) harder than learning to read tablature symbols. |

jazz isnt really based upon riffs, more on chord progressions, if you get to know some jazz standards then you can listen to how people improv over them, and then try your own thing. i wouldnt say being able to read standard notation is essential, only if your planning on learning note for note what a person is playing, but for understanding theory and why they are playing the notes they play, you dont need it so much, thats just my approach, |

I don't know the exact science on jazz, but I can make pretty much any song sound 'jazzy' with this conversion chart!
Let's use good old C for our example
Normal-Jazz Sound
C Cmaj7
Dm Dm7
Em E7 or Em7
F F7 or Fmaj7
G G7 or Gmaj7
Am Am7
Bdim Bm |

Ok.....here is a nice chord progression that is blues /jazz bassed key of Bb (Slow and Freely about 60 beats per minute)
Bb7 Ab9 Bb7 Bm7 E9
//// //// //// // //
Bbm7 Eb9 Ebm7 Ab9 Dm7 G9 Dbm7 Gb9
// // // // // // // //
Cm7 F9 Bm7 E9 Bb7M Db9 Gb7M B7M :
// // // // // // // //
Many Jazz progressions will use a 32 bar progression. You can find man sights on the web by just typing "standard jazz progressions"
You will find out quickly that many pieces will modulate from key many times thoughout progression. This is where the tension and release will come from.
I hope that this helps. |
