intonation

im having trouble understanding the twelth fret harmonic thing to get perfect pitch right up the neck ,can someone explain it easily step by step please ive got a tuner but i dont get ""play a twelth fret harmonic"on the bottom e string then compare this with a note fretted at the twelth fret. To me thats writen like confusing jargen or maybe im just slow?

When you play a twelth fret harmonic on the bottom e string, it should sound the same as the fretted note at the twelth fret on the e string. If the fretted note sounds higher then the harmonic, you need to make that string slightly longer, by screwing the piece at the bottom of the string even more towards the back . If the fretted note sounds lower then the harmonic, you need to make the string a bit shorter. Was this what you wanted to know, or did I misunderstand? I'm sure it's explained exactly how to make those adjustments somewhere on the internet.

how do i play a twelth fret harmonic do i just pick the low e sting alone and let it ring.then play the high e string and hope they match pitch?this is problaby simple to do but understanding it writen confuses me.

paerdeveygh could you write step by step what to do please after ,starting with a fresh set of strings i push the strings up through the back of my fender then push all the ends in the headstock pin holes and begin 2 tune up but how do i adjust the the bridge saddles into a well set up intonation this is where i need help on going through step by step the harmonic procedure.Thanks for your patience im ok seeing something done and copying it but when its writen it is a nightmare 4 me to get down..

This intonating can't really be done on and accoustic guitar, but on an electric guitar you should:

- plug it into an electric tuner
- Switch to the neck pickup and max out the volume.
- Tune your guitar to standard 440 tuning
- play the harmonic by touching just very lightly on the string right, directly over the 12th fret. The tuner should read exactly zero because you just tuned it.
- compare this harmonic with the normal fretted note (12th fret), but don’t push too hard.
- If the needle goes to the right of zero, the string is sharp, you need it longer. Barely loosen the Phillips in the saddle clamp plate and push the saddle back a tiny little bit,
- if the needle goes to the left of zero, the string is flat, you want to shorten the string. Move the saddle fork a little toward the pickups.
- Once all the strings are intonated, tighten the Phillips and double check each string for intonation. Redo if necessary.
