Using Em instead of Edim

In the key of Fmajor, the vii is Edim. Is there any reason why I cannot play Eminor instead?

Technically, it is not in the scale (according to the progression listed on this site), but all of the notes that are different are still in the same scale. I just like the quality of the Eminor a lot better than that of Edim.

Thanks

Well the E dim has a flat 5 and the the E minor doesn't. So the E dim notes are E,G,Bb (all notes in Key of F) the E minor notes are E,G,B (B is not in Key of F) So if you play the E minor you are no longer in the Key of "F".

Thanks for the input. I see what you are saying.

I am creating a vocal melody that uses the following pitches:

A A# B D E G

So I guess this is not in any key at all. Hmmm...this is confusing.

but you can play a bVII ( Eb major ) instead of the Edim , the diminished chord is very rarely used so often substituted by this chord...

@jaden , with the A,A#,B you're probably using a blues scale (E blues minor)

when playing in F major, you can also use the C7 instead of the Edim, only you have to leave all the C notes out...

Thanks to everyone who posted.

Since the A# is only used a couple of times (3 per verse), I could simply make them accidentals. If I do that, then I can use either C major or A minor right, since there are no other sharps or flats in the entire melody?

yes or Gmajor and E minor , maybe E minor fits more because the A# is the E minor blues scale :)
don't know that much about it , but i think e minor suits more than a minor
well just try out both and see for yourself what sounds best

good luck

@ paerdeveygh a C7 with no C notes is just a E diminished triad.

@jaden403 ....I would go with what mightydave said. Your are playing the E blues scale so I would take the chords from the G major scale. That is why the E minor
sounds better because it fits the notes you are basing your melody off.

@ bodom,

"@ paerdeveygh a C7 with no C notes is just a E diminished triad."

Yeah, indeed, you're right, my talent for stating the obvious never ceases to amaze me :)
