songwriting

hey i was looking for a few tips or sumthing.see i can write music fine but its merging both the music and lyrics together nicely that i hav a little bit of trouble with.or coming up with an rhythm to go with a melody or sumthing.i have been able to do it sometimes but it takes alot of time and i feel its not quite as gud as it could be.i was wondering if anyone has any pointers to help me along or is it something tht can onli be helped by lots of practice??

Do what ever comes natural. You probably are trying to force it too much. A simple melody can almost always make a better song than a complicated one because the listener can remember it better. Also, if you have a rhythm for the song, write to that rhythm. The words will always fit the song.

In the middle of writing my first full song, only started palying guitar recently. Problem is, i'm finding it hard to create solos. My range is somewhat limited so they all sound the same which is really irritating. Any tips?

I'm playing acoustic...

Play more than one note at a time. Many times I get stuck when I am doing a Jazz solo and bye adding another note to what you are doing will give it any added flavor. Now that you are playing an acoustic, bending can be hard but don't disregard it completely. Just by bending a 4th of a step you can add some color to a simple solo. Also always try to find places to add accidentals. By adding notes not in the scale, the listener will be more suprised and will remember it easier. Finaly, simple is not bad, so go by instinct.

Just finished the song

Isn't too bad actually, short at around 2.5-3 minutes, but I like it. It's not my usually bendy playing either (I'm a little obsessive when it comes to bending notes.) Just a simple song. Cheers for the tips Chimzar, I finished writing the song before I read them, but they'll come in handy for future endeavours.

I'm pretty chuffed the solos work so well actually. I wrote the rythmn and the lead completely seperately yet it someone fits together perfectly.

This sounds stupid but got any tips on how to translate what you hear in you head to on the guitar????

Trial and Error.

Tis the only way. That's how I wrote my solos for the song I've just completed. Pure trial and error (plus a basic knowledge of chords, scales and fretts helps too ;)

Mine? At the moment I have no recording equipment so it'll be difficult, but I shall see what I can do. I may be able to record the guitar 1 track using my video recorder and save it as an mp3, then put it on an mp3 player and record the guitar 2/vocal track in time to it (to reduce layered feedback) and put it together in moviemaker. But the quality won't be good. I shall try though and see what happens.

all i can say is songwriting is an art, and art needs insparation, all you need to do is find an insparation and the rest comes naturally, i write songs myself and it can take me months to find insparation.

The fact that you want to will make you a songwriter. The trick is to never give up. Posting on a forum like this you will gain a lot of perspective. It never ceases to amaze me how many talented people are willing to help out by posting answers.
