hey, i consider myself not a great singer but i know how to sing, not to hurt the voice, not to strain, know how to breath, my voice is just not amazing. i can get it to a certain point if i add a bit of a natural southern accent that i had but got rid of because it was just kinda annoying in new york...

anyway im sure you know where this is going...

WELL THINK AGAIN! what i wana ask is if anyone knows how to add that rasphy grit to your voice without damaging it... i can do it. but it hurts my throat so i dont. im not talking about a heavy metal scream... im talking like janis joplin type... paul mcartney does it in a few beatles songs... joe cocker does it...hendrix does it a lot! its like that grit... ill explain it in more detail if you dont know what i mean but im going biking right now... anyway singers... help me. i really wana take my singing to the next level.

I know what your talking about. Like Mcartney sings Oh Darlin. Or Chris Cornell from Sound Garden. I don't know how old you are but I wasnt able to do this until I was in my 20's. I dont know how to explain how but what I do is sing loud and sorta break through the clarity in my voice. I dont think there is a safe way of doing this without damaging your voice long term though.

I'm going to lunch now and I will try it in my car and let you know what I come up with when I come back.

a few things you could try:

whiskey/ dairy products/ cigarettes before you sing

practice controlled brakes in your voice between vowel and a consonant sounds (ay and ar are good to start if your going for a southern thang)

bring the sound from your stomach up to your nose and back letting it catch in your throat on the way (this could be damaging)

but in reality i doubt your gonna get that authentic Joplin sound without putting some strain on your vocal chords ( i really cant imagine that joplin had a huge amount voice theory training if she did then i'm guessing she got out of her mind on mescalin and ignored it)

sorry to say in general that level of gravel/ rust has to be accumulated over time dude

Back from lunch. Yeah. I still don't know how to explain but it has nothing to do with smoking or anything that iritates your vocal chords. Try singing loudly in a higher range with your throat more open than closed.

I would also like to know this. how bad I want to sing like this. but something i find that helps is cheese, it kinda gets your throat gurgly.

i dont mean to sound mean, but i kinda wanted advice from someone who knows how to do it... i dont mean to sound arrogant but one of the worst things you can do is sing really loud with that rasph. drinking dairy qhiskey and smoking. i got a chuckled out of that :) surley your joking... surley :)

i dont look to sound like janis just to get that effect you know...

the reason for me for saying that is one can SERIOUSLy damage your voice by singing wrong. like permanant vocal damage. i dont want that.

I completely understand, I just did that as a joke. Lemmy's voice came from drinking a lot of alcohol. I'm definitely not one to give advice on singing. Only reason I sing is to not make my songs so bland.

i have the opposite problem i don't know how i do it....smoking made it worse. the louder i sing the worse it is. my philosophy on singing is to be real don't think about hitting the right notes but feel it. "put your passion in the air" Lizard king(not morrison the skateboarder) thats what music is to me, emotion.

btw thats my favorite joplin song! right on man for good taste!

dude i love janis joplin i coulda taken any one of her songs :)

i love that thing she does at the beginning. you would think its falsetto because you can hear the air coming out but idk what it is.

in singing ive always said the most important part is hitting the right pitch. then having good timing then having good tone. if your off key the whole song its pointless... i have relativly good pitch and generally dont have to worry about pitch because i can tell when im on or not... i also have good timing... but my tone isnt great and i cant do stuff i want to... however i can do i metal scream... however its rather loud..

Man I am sooooo with you on that I'm getting goosebumps!
This is one of my fav Janice songs right here. ENJOY

As far as tips for singing like this? I don't know Elliott, you either have the vocal chords for it or ya don't. It's sorta like me saying "I want to be a professional basketball player, can someone tell me how to be 7' tall?" Ain't gonna happen!
On the other hand if I were to make some suggestions I would say to sing along with songs like this at a very low level and work on emulating that raspyness. Don't scream them out just sing quietly for weeks on end. It's either in your voice box or it isn't. Keep your throat wet, so have some water on hand. Your tongue will have an effect on this too so try minimal tounge movement also.
