DarkRiff says:
Who's you favorite shredder?
Mine is definitely Paul Gilbert
although i dislike the term; it's needed, i suppose.
and hell yes! its another vote for Paul Gilbert from me !!!
not Paul w/with Racer X or Mr Small, but rather, all those amazingly beautiful, Beatles-esque, heavy-with-purpose, well written 'solo' CDS that began with 'King Of Clubs' ...
i rarely ever associate
passion with "shredding"-> but Gilbert is very much an exception to that "rule", imo.
acoustic, electric, it dont matter , Paul will tear that sucker a new one and do it with S O U L.
He is a rare bird these days!
when (i love PGs vocals) he went w/ a vocalist on the new one he wrote accordingly, and played amazingly. (i've taught 'Last Rock 'n' Roll Star to a few students already (i must confess ... i was the one who turned the onto Pauls solo magic, lol and love teaching it)
the man has great feel, he is extremely emotive, and tosses in a bit of Pat Travers style roadhouse-blues licks, throws a Jim Hall lick over there, only to end up in a Chet Atkins meets (his idol) Eddie Van!
anyone who can so effortlessly jump from style to style, making each his own, and do so with a few 128Th-Note Triplets at 3,000,000 BPM IN ONE TUNE , and have the tune work as wonderfully as, say... 'My Religion' ... well... gets my vote.
(funny i was thinking Fripp while writing this and wondering how he'd feel about being called a shredder ... cause , i mean hell, just listen to Fracture or Larks II LOL or-or! .... i'd say he would hate it. but it is kinda funny same with Mike Stern and/or Bill Frissel LOL)\
but
YES ...
Paul Motherfracin' Gilbet B'Gawd!
RAWK!
