although i dislike the term; it's needed, i suppose.
and hell yes! its another vote for Paul Gilbert from me !!!
not Paul w/with Racer X or Mr Small, but rather, all those amazingly beautiful, Beatles-esque, heavy-with-purpose, well written 'solo' CDS that began with 'King Of Clubs' ...
i rarely ever associate passion with "shredding"-> but Gilbert is very much an exception to that "rule", imo.

acoustic, electric, it dont matter , Paul will tear that sucker a new one and do it with S O U L.
He is a rare bird these days!

when (i love PGs vocals) he went w/ a vocalist on the new one he wrote accordingly, and played amazingly. (i've taught 'Last Rock 'n' Roll Star to a few students already (i must confess ... i was the one who turned the onto Pauls solo magic, lol and love teaching it)

the man has great feel, he is extremely emotive, and tosses in a bit of Pat Travers style roadhouse-blues licks, throws a Jim Hall lick over there, only to end up in a Chet Atkins meets (his idol) Eddie Van!
anyone who can so effortlessly jump from style to style, making each his own, and do so with a few 128Th-Note Triplets at 3,000,000 BPM IN ONE TUNE , and have the tune work as wonderfully as, say... 'My Religion' ... well... gets my vote.

(funny i was thinking Fripp while writing this and wondering how he'd feel about being called a shredder ... cause , i mean hell, just listen to Fracture or Larks II LOL or-or! .... i'd say he would hate it. but it is kinda funny same with Mike Stern and/or Bill Frissel LOL)\

but YES ... Paul Motherfracin' Gilbet B'Gawd!

Although I'd like to know what you define a "Shredder", I'm going with Paul too, hands down.

Vote for Paul Gilbert, head over heels the rest, plays with speed, precision, feeling, classical and contemporery themes and styles.

Course thats my opinion, debate not needed XD

I still think that Richie Blackmore could give all the above a good run for their money...........If only he'd put his acoustic guitar down long enough to prove it!

Not sure I would classify Satriani as a shredder - his solo technique is heavily based around a legato method.

And I notice everyone seems to be mentioning players within the metal genre - y'all ever heard of a player called Joe Pass? He quite simply sh*ts on anything that Gilbert/Malmsteen/Petrucci are capable of (just thought I'd throw that last comment in there to stir up some tension!)

i love Joe Pass
(and Jim Hall, and Friz and Stern, and Wes Montgomery and Grant Green and-and-and)
but i disagree with the statement that he (Joe Pass)
"sh!ts on anything that Gilbert/Malmsteen/Petrucci are capable of" and i don't even enjoy the other two ya mentioned (i refer to Malmsteen & Patrucci as a 'Typists')
Gilbert aint a typist ... just a damned good player, and i'm sure that Pass would see that

(BTW: JUST listened to his two "live/studio/alone" cds ; 'Songs For Ellen' & 'Unforgettable' ...great stuff!).

anyways :

apples-oranges imo

RAWK!

PS : Tommy Emmanuel or Kenny Burrell or Django would eat Joe fer lunch ...

Paul Gilbert, John 5 and Rusty Cooley are all really good, but Paul's gotta be my fav. He knows so much stuff and his lessons are amazing. He also did an amazing cover of "Fly Me to the Moon" on YouTube.
