Do you start on teh root notes? I learned teh first postition pretty well. Not i'm going on to learn the second one and the first note isn't the root note. Do I only start from the root note? This is what i'm looking at:

You should think of it as starting on the first note of each postion. This is the concept of a mode. This is what the patterns really are. |

So, when learning this I should just learn the full patterns and not try to start from the root notes? |

I just tried to play 2nd position on the 5th string C note closest to the stock. Starting from C and moveing up the pattern, doens't make sense. If I am to start from the number 1 on the 2nd pattern then i would end up hitting C D D#, instead of C D E like tha Cmajor scale should be. I guess I dont understand how to apply the positions. You said I coul play open position anywhere i wanted to. But it doesn't seem like it would work. Can you help me out? |

If you play that seccond pattern with the root C, it is not an Ionian/major scale, but a different mode; it doesn´t sound like "do,re, mi,fa,sol,la,ti,do". Those modes we´ve been talking about are by the way also explaned pretty well on the site http://www.guitarstuff.com/lessons/majmode/majmode.html
for the C major scale/mode you have to use position four, and shift the root (5th string) way back to the 3rd fret:
----[----[--1-[----[--3-[----[---
----[----[--1-[----[--3-[--4-[---
----[--1-[----[--3-[--R-[----[---
----[--1-[--2-[----[--4-[----[---
----[--1-[--R-[----[--4-[----[---
----[----[--2-[----[--4-[----[---
..........3rd .......5th
Next to it (higher on the neck is position 5 and next to that you start over with position one again)
It's kinda hard sometimes for me to explain, since English is not my main language, but anyways,,,

Or you could use position 3, and shift the root (fith string) back to the 3rd fret. That would be an open position,, |

Damn, I thought if you learned the patterns, you could play any major scale by just starting on the relevant note... |

Yeah, if you want to play a major scale/Ionian mode and you want to use those patterns/positions, the root note has to be the one that is encircled,, |

yea i know the root note is the one that is circled. Its just that someone here said you could use the poistions anywhere you wanted to and whatever note you started on was that major scale. Now you're talking about modes...
What did I miss? |

Look, memorize all of those patterns. It is necessary. The G Major(Ionian) pattern(any of them) are the same patterns used for all of the relative modes. |

Naa man
don't worry bout it windowpane
major scale = Ionian mode, same stuff
just learn the common scales and learn them like a picture in your head, play them from every position possible (starting on the root or dancing on it may improve the lick), starting on the first last in the pattern or heck even in the middle. Just remember at Fred 12 it starts whole over again so you only have to remember open to 11 string (or 1 to 12) scale patterns.
Like paerdeveygh notes:
When you play the major scale/Ionian mode the second pattern is the fist pattern of the Dorian mode. yadayade ect ect. so they all get a ass pat to the left. (its one picture just being moved to the side)
common dude learn the CAGED system and It all will come like OMG!
space out for a couple of minutes with it and It will come to you.
If I don't make sense I'm sorry, or If I'm telling obvious things you allready know? ditto. |
