Mine would be a tie between Dimebag, Steve Vai, and Paul Gilbert.

Anyone else?

Aight... as we know, I just cant say Steve Vai, Malmsteen, Laiho, Satriani anymore... theyre best, but they not have advantages like this one have... so heres something new.

Empirism, glad you've heard of her! She's pretty awesome, she played in some of Michael Jackson's songs on stage, and a few other people I've just forgotten who haha. :P

Guthrie Govan,
Muhammed Suiçmez, - Necrophagist
Sami Raatikainen, - Necrophagist
Tom MacLean - To-Mera

i got to say out of all the em the only one i could truly ever stand to listen to is Paul G. but i do like Steve Vai but that comes from my love affair with Frank Zappa. through that Guthrie guy jazz always talks about(form the videos she/others posted) seems cool but sadly i haven't been bothered to truly listen to him. so my vote goes for Paul for what it is worth, seeing that i find so much with what is wrong with guitar today in people's interest in so called "Shredders"

michael angelo batio
michael romeo(symphony-x)

chris storey
yngwie malmsteen
niccolo paganini(he ripped up the violin)
buckethead

but if i could pick just one it would be rusty for sure

This thread is turning from a favorite shredder to favorite guitarist thread... But as far as the elite of instrumental shred guitarists I'd have to say my absolute favorite is Gilbert. Buckethead is a close second. I just think their stuff is extremely creative.

@ EMB - Very true.

@ BBT - I agree with Alexi. With Kerry, no. He's cocky, and disses other bands for no good reason. Plus his solos sound like hes trying to kill his guitar....or maybe he thought it was a gift from God and purposley tried to destroy it lmao.

I forgot about Jari! He's extremely underrated, I can't wait until the new Wintersun album.

Dave Mustaine.

So evidently you consider a shredder anyone who is a proficient guitarist?

Is a shredder not anyone who is a virtuoso guitar player? I would consider Tommy Emmanuel, and Chet Atkins "shredders" even though they are not metal players.
