Anything to know when teaching a complete N008 how to play bass? My friend is buying one, and I thought it'd be pretty easy to teach. Nothing too spectacular, just simple metal/hard rock bass stuff.

start doing like simple stuff, like the stuff you would start with when learning acoustic. stuff with G,C,A chords etc.

Theres chords on bass!? **!!!! I told him there wasn't. lol. Well, I'll get him to buy it and force him haha. Do tell my friend. Also, how much different is the tuning? His pack comes with a tuner, but neither of us know how to use a bass tuner.

while there so much more to the bass. you could just have him start out but playing the root of each chord or implied chord that the guitar is playing.

you generality don't play chords on the bass but there is no reason why you technically couldn't. i wouldn't because is seems stupid to me, but i would still learn the triad shapes to under stand the fret broad.

the tuning of the bass is E1,A1,D2,G2 while the guitar is E2,A2,D3,G3,B3,E4. So he bass is just the four largest strings just a octave lower

i mean play songs with those type of chords, when the guitar plays an E or Em7, just play E on the bass, etc. im no expert on bass but i play on my churches worship team.

First off, and I mean no offence by this, if you even have to ask that question, you SHOULD NOT be teaching this guy. Especially since you didn't know there were chords on a bass. You don't know enough to be teaching someone else, you need to learn yourself first.

For all you know you could be teaching this person the wrong stuff, and that's such a problem for people who start off because it'll be even more difficult to change their errors later on.

tell him to google it.. if he doesnt know, teach him all that can be transfered from the guitar to the bass...like scales, mods, etc...
make him learn how to slap and pop and to get some callus on his fingertips for his own good

And Jazz, I know. I'm gonna start researching it. He just doesn't have the time to do normal lessons. Plus he told me he didn't have the cash. And, yeah Soy, that is true. I already told him his fingertips will feel like hell the first couple weeks/months. All he wants is to know how to keep a rhythm, and be in a band. My band I guess, thats what he told me. When he learns how to carry rhythms beats and stuff, I already have a drummer, and another guitarist to trade rhythm and leads with. Although the always hard to find frontman is still unknown.
